Dear Reader,
Today I would like to talk about doing warm up drawings (nearly) first thing in the morning.
I often go on about drawing regularly and I know how hard it is to keep up.
Maybe you find something that works well for a while and then it phases out again? If so don’t worry! You are not alone! I speak to you thinking of you as a community that enjoys drawing and life happens to all of us and then we loose the thread cause something takes priority and then we kind of forget about drawing or just feel bad cause we would like to but simply don’t manage to fit it in.
I’ve been on this cycle for years and years, the trick is to always keep reintroducing practice when you remember to. They probably will fizzle out. That’s an opportunity to incorporate drawing in a different manner within your day.
I had recently phased out drawing regularly in the evenings and felt that I needed to sketch more regularly so I started doing 15mins warm up drawings before work. I found that this has more than the regularity benefit.
It is nice to start of the day with a fun little task. It feels good to get something done and improves my lookout for the rest of the day. Currently I have a bunch of tasks everyday that I require me to be an adult like phone calls. I can do it, but I don’t like it, thus the sketch brightens my lookout! :D
There is little to no pressure with these doodles since they are not meant to be anything. I like to show them in my stories on Insta but I can also always not show anything.
The timing of 15mins is good since I draw differently when I’m on the clock an this allows for more looseness and sometimes confidence.

Oftentimes random sketches come of the warm up but sometimes good ideas come on the spot.

I also feel good about using that morning energy that I have for something creative rather than wasting all of it on calls and paperwork.
Taking 15 mins before doing the actual drawing you need to draw to loosen up is also really helpful to take away some tension and have your hands more attuned to the process.

Two days ago I also started doing this but 30 minutes. Like: timer, drawing without any expectations. It's been really rewarding so far, to just draw whatever for the sake of it.
