Dear Reader,
Today I would like to talk about my experience of parenting and working as an artist.
My husband and I have been sharing the parental load pretty equally and I’m very grateful for that.
My son is now 7 years old and I might be back to the same amount of drawing before I had my son. I can’t really quantify it but we have arranged out life in a manner that allows me to pursue my art.
When I got pregnant I was scared that as a mom I would not have the time to draw anymore once my child was born so I started sketching pretty much daily. My reasoning was that I would like to get really good and fast at sketching so that I would be able to continue creating somewhat finished pieces in the little time left for myself with a baby/child .
I started documenting the pregnacy…
…while also keeping up quick fun sketches like outfit drawings.
When my son was born, drawing as expected was tricky but I sacrificed those moments where people say “when the baby sleeps, you should try to sleep” and showering was on the low end of my priorities ^^’. Not saying this is the way, but it is about priorities and I really worked to make time for art a priority. And since I was so practiced in sketching I didn’t have to fight with myself to bring up the energy and get started.

The first couple years I did loads of family sketches but little polished and finished work since I only had small chunks of time to do them in. At that point I was really good at sketching but my color and more finished work naturally suffered.
But I do love painting as much as I like sketching even though I often get told that sketching is where my true strength lies. Well that may be so but I’m not going to let myself be put in the box of only sketching… :) So as soon as the time stretches became a bit longer I reintroduced color
Nowadays I try to sketch some family life from time to time but my focus has shifted a bit to other projects.
But now that I look at 2024 and not having documented anything yet I feel like I should do at least a few, since I love looking back at these family portraits. <3

Hi Simone, for me your sketches are full finished art works. I guess the power of art is that it makes us FEEL. Your sketches make feel so cozy and warm and loved. That's your super power! :)
I wonder how you could sketch all those beautiful and funny moments. I mean I can't imagine you taking photos non stop in just the right momentos to later use them as references. Is it that your skills let you sketch many scenes, poses, emotions, without references? Thank you in advance!
Daily life drawings are my favourite!
