Dear Reader,
I am nearly done with my small people book project and am at a stage where I have many things that I can and must do and to a degree don’t know what I must doPrioritizing and finding out what needs doing really isn’t my strenght.
Give me a clear goal, an illustration start to finish, no problem. Concepting and finding an idea, I have learned how to do that.
Finding out what the most sensible todos are and the order in which it makes sense to do them is super hard for me.
One of the tasks that I set myself is this map of my small peoples world:
I’m not sure if it is my nr 1 priority. Very probably it isn’t. But it has a bunch of trees and I’m choosing to draw every one of them no copy and paste.
Am I procrastinating by drawing trees? Maybe. Very probably.
You might say”Why would you do such a thing?! Copy and pasting a couple trees would not be a crime! “
I use copy and paste where I feel it is fitting and I could use it to some level in this case but what I need now is to think and sort through what is important. Drawing each tiny tree allows me to do just that that while also moving towards my goal ( my finished book and some beautiful additions to it) and makes it feel more hand made too. Which is why I feel that time drawing every tree is time well spent.
Hmm I feel like that about trees in general :D
Here is a sneak peak of the cover I’m planning:
I’m no overthinker. I am a straight ahead type of person, figuring out stuff along the way. This is pretty cool for getting suff done and when the tasks are clear. But the down side to this is that it Since I barely do any research first I just go galloping down the first best path without beeing sure that it leads to my goal in the straightest and most effective line which I then notice on the way and start floundering around and hectically start new tasks and then stopping doing them secondguessing if they are useful or not.
Good example of this would be doing marketing graphics where I don’t even have my messaging clear and then scrapping it while figuring it out in the middle.
Or making doing more and more illustrations that could be cute stickers, while not needing that many stickers.
While I love stickers I haven’t had any printed for ages but I now have a bunch of motivs that could be stickers and find it hard to choose I can’t just do all… x)
Do you now see why I must draw all the trees and think about what I actually need to do?
How do you find out what is important for your projects? Am I the only one meandering around?

Yup, this is me. If I make one more promotional image, or sticker design, or if I just draw this by hand...I can find it hard to try and figure out what the exact thing is to move me forward, so sometimes it feels like I'll meander instead doing all these other things. Are they important?! Who can tell! Sometimes, you just gotta draw those trees. Also, those stickers as stamps is a fun idea.
I love the art here. And thank you for sharing your thoughts. I feel less alone in my imperfect path. I think that sometimes whatever gets you moving is the best path forward. I mean, maybe the shorter path would have still taken you longer because of the thinking time and maybe even motivationwise. And you wouldn't have all of these other lovely extra drawings. right?
haha. in any case you're definetely not alone. Congratulations on drawing all the trees.
