Dear Reader,
I thought with Christmas looming up and Black Friday around the corner. I could give you some recommendations and ideas in these next newsletters for what to wish for or maybe to gift to a fellow artist.
Today I would like to start with some book recommendations. The following books are dearly beloved by me and all helped me grow as an artist:
James Gurney: Color and Light
This is my understanding color bible! I had so many AHA! moments reading this. Like the understanding that different colors are most brilliant at different values.
Framed Ink
This to me is the best book on how compose an interesting scene using composition, contrast and storytelling.
Dream Worlds
This a book with an ugly layout (in my opinion) but great value inside. It also deals with the composition of a scene and leading the eye. With examples from various Disney movies.
Drawn to Life
These books look boring but are pure gold and I like opening them from time to time and just reading a chapter at random. I gives me food for thought and the lessons are in the back of my mind when sketching. The Skillful Huntsman
I’m not hugely into concept art but this is such a good book on playing with a topic and creating designs for a portfolio. I really like these approaches!
Hehe well and since we are in the category of books, may I also suggest my two books into which I have poured all the lessons that I learned over the years the working as an artist ?
I often get asked which book to begin with, I recommend for you to start with Sketch Every Day. This book has a lot of basics one needs as an artist, like anatomy & char design, posing, composition of scenes, advice on building drawing routines and arting as a mum.
In Draw What You Love , I focus a bit more on a bit more elaborate character drawing topics, like for costume design or action posing than in the first and I cover more topics on drawing and painting backgrounds.
If you want to support me and get my books it would be best if you get them at my publisher 3dtotal.com , there my share is much bigger than from Amazon or other :D You also get a signed copy and a mini print!<3
