I started doing this too and I was surprised at how much it made me love sketching again, it was really nice not having to stress about whether or not something was good enough.
I'm so glad you were able to love sketching again! I definitely agree with you. It's so nice to not have to worry about whether or not my own sketches are good for social media!
oh that's interesting! I often just wait a bit till I start sharing it... but I never considered a space that is for my eyes only... I will ponder this and maybe try it.
Wow I feel like I'm learning stuff everyday! It's really smart how you wait a bit before you start sharing anything from your sketchbook. I think if I had another sketchbook that was more public then maybe I would be able to do that. But I tend to only lean on one sketchbook..
The habit I've been trying to develop recently is to pay more attention to observational drawing as a way to not only improve my ability to see something and get it down on paper, but also as a way to reduce the amount of time I'm wasting scrolling through social media.
I've been making my own sketchbooks for about a year now and I have small, pocket-sized hardback sketchbook which I take with me everywhere. If I'm meeting a buddy for coffee and I arrive early or even if I'm just parked up with a few minutes to spare on the school run, I can quickly doodle something I see.
It's not necessarily about the drawing being good, it's more about getting into the habit of looking and just enjoying the process of putting pen to paper. Allowing myself to scribble something, or take a bit more time has been very liberating. Also, stopping and paying attention to something, I feel like I'm slowly increasing my attention span to pre-social media levels :D
!!! I need to do this again ... I usually have only one sketchbook I really use but I used to have a small one that I wrote in or doodled but I kinda forgot about it... and just having the habit of popping it out where ever is so good!
I've gone from being someone with one sketchbook which I'd go through phases of using, then periods of downtime where I'd not draw anything which would then lead to the crushing guilt for having not drawn anything. Since I started having a few sketchbooks for different scenarios, the amount of time I'm drawing has definitely increased. Coupled with allowing myself to make a "bad" drawing has just lifted any pressure and allowed me to get back to just enjoying drawing again :)
That sounds like a really fun habit! I love how you make your own sketchbooks! I think I'm going to give observational drawing a try since there are times when I don't know what to draw!
It's a fun exercise to try out. I work from home most days so I sometimes struggle on the days where I don't leave my house, there's only so many times I can find it interesting to draw my coffee cup haha that said, if I *really* try to look, I often do find something that sparks a bit of inspiration. I definitely find it easier to find that spark while I'm out in the world though
I can definitely understand that. It's always more fun to draw something new from a new environment then to draw from the same old environment that you're used to seeing!
My healthy habit is avoiding sharing pages from my sketchbook on social media. I like to have at least one space where it's just for me!

My healthy habit is to just go for a walk with my dog.
So much inspiration it brings. Birds singing. Wind blowing and so on.
Do take a lot of photos when I see something that interest me. With or without my dog in it 😊
Hahah that's great for me that is picking up my kid and taking detours on the way...
Thank you for sharing I try to do something like “Morning pages” but for illustration-doodle for 5 minutes every morning have a notebook by my bed:)
Oh a notebook next to the bed is really good! I usually have to get up and get my sketchbook... which i do when an idea comes...
